BP Oil Spill Update #6

07/21/2010
tags: ,

Now that BP has finally capped the oil spill, we can now start moving forward with fixing the issues that the spill has caused. One issue that is becoming more and more publicized is the number of abandoned and stray animals popping up in shelters all across the Gulf area. In fact, shelters are reporting record numbers of animals being brought into shelters. Gulf Coast animal shelters have grown overcrowded with the dogs and cats of out-of-work fishermen who can no can no longer afford to keep them, and nearly 200 have been euthanized in recent weeks. Beth Brewster, a director of an animal shelter in New Orleans, has said that her number of animals that she has received have quadrupled since this time last year. With the number of animals coming in and the almost stagnant rate that people are adopting them, many more animals than usual are being euthanized.

We here at Nicholas K are animals lovers and encourage everyone to look into ways that you can help with this very serious, heartbreaking issue. To find out ways you can help or if you are thinking about pet adoption, please check out these organizations and shelters:

The Sweet Spot

07/14/2010

We did a little house hunting in the Catskills this weekend and wanted to share some of the great photos. The two towns, Bovina and Andes, were little quaint towns with a lot character. In Andes, we ran across this amazing little antique store that had some of the coolest stuff. The owner teaches eclectic art and his collection of stuff was certainly that! We also ended up staying at this little Bed and Breakfast called The Mountain Brook Inn that we fell in love with. The owner of the B&B cooked fresh muffins every morning and we suggest you check out his saturday night dinner where he uses home-grown organic veggies. For an outdoor spot, try the Andes Hotel restaurant. Below are some cool pics from the weekend..

These are pictures from the antique shop Kabinet & Krammer.. check out the coyote! We also added two pics from The Mountain Brook Inn so you guys can see why we loved it!

How to stay cool in this heatwave

07/07/2010

So the Northeast is experiencing a record-breaking heatwave this summer (temperatures have been up to 103 degrees here in New York!) and everyone is so hot all the time. Our Air Conditioning unit has been acting funny and not working here at the studio. (Don’t worry, we’re getting a new unit tomorrow. HOORAY) Anyways, if anyone else is having trouble staying cool this summer and wants some tips and tricks that don’t involve raising your Air Conditioning bill, we’re here to help. Below are a couple of tips we found that we wanna share with you:

1. Add water to your clothes and let the air make you cold.

2. Sweat it out. Heat leaves through sweat pours.

3. Dress with the heat in mind.

4.Go Downstairs. Heat Rises.

5. Turn of electronics. They produce heat.

6. Use Mint products. Mint is naturally cooling.

7. Eat spicy food. This forces you to sweat. Ever wonder why the hottest countries have the spiciest cuisine?

8. Freeze water bottles and place them on your body.

9. Place a slice of cucumber on your forehead. It cools down your body.

10. Place ice cubes on major veins and let the ice cool you down.
